SAHM dollar value continued

January 7th, 2009 at 09:07 pm

I'm still working on calculating my "value" at home. I've included daycare, grocery savings, CVS/Walgreens savings, and added the cost of 1 takeout meal. I figured that if I were working we'd be doing takeout at least 1 more night per week ($20). I put the daycare cost at $125/wk for half day care (daughter is in half day Kindergarten). I've also been getting my house ready to paint (caulking cracks, filling holes, etc.) and I priced that at $25/hour. Do these prices seem reasonable? My son is in 4th grade, but I would also need after school care for him but I have no idea what that would cost, any thoughts?

I don't have any advice on the costs, but I know that a website regularly puts out what a SAHM is worth. Last year it totalled over $160K...or that is the amount I remember, it could be less! Apparently most of that is in overtime, since we work more than 40 hours a week. Just know that you do have value as a stay at home parent, even if you don't come up with a monetary figure.

I realize I have value, but what I'm trying to quantify is the actual value of me staying home. Some of the things that I'm not quantifying are the things that I would normally do, regardless of whether or not I have a job outside the home. Laundry would get done, regardless of employment. Same with grocery shopping. However, I wouldn't necessarily scour the ads and the coupons in order to get the best deals. I'm just trying to get a more realistic value of my time at home.

As for the cost of after school care it can very greatly, and even if you get a price that does not mean you get in.

Our schools have a afterschool program at the school for $89 a month (limited enrollment) I am number 23 on the waiting list to get in for our school.

I pay $139 a month for after school care and had a $50 signup fee! The YMCA would have been $199 plus a membership ($10 for student) and $100 signup fee.

The local ECLC is $250 per month I think there sign up was $150.
